A 'tongue in cheek' story I wrote while on assignment for The Times in Hong Kong about a cut price sale of Mao Tsi Tung statutes in a department nearly got me into serious hot water with the Chinese authorities who accused me of insulting their leader. Sir David Trench, the Governor at the time, got word to me about the potential political row and I was on the very next plane back to London.
