Simon Clyne, the premier Fleet Street picture editor of his era with a letter from the Queen on his 100th birthday. He once told me that I would never make it as a journalist because I was a southerner. When we meet again very many years later he instantly remembered his advice and said "I made a big mistake, didn't I? I know you have done well." That was probably the best compliment anyone has ever paid me. When he died in 2006 at 102 journalism lost one of its greats.
