Derek Bentley Execution
1953
Crowds outside Wandsworth Prison protest against the execution of Derek Bentley who was hanged for his part in the murder of a policeman after last-minute appeals for clemency were rejected. I am the reporter from the Croydon Times wearing the trilby hat and have been against capital punishment ever since. Years later Bentley's conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal in 1999 on the grounds the judge was biased and the police had lied.
